Things I Love Thursday: February 18, 2010

Carey Mulligan
Credit: Unknown

Just saw An Education, and although I found it to be all over the place in certain aspects, I liked it, and enjoyed the aesthetic. I love the early sixties as a time period anyway. And could Carey Mulligan be any cuter? I think not.

Olympics
I don't think I've ever watched the Olympics as much as I have the past couple of days. My reading week has involved waking up at noon, turning on the coverage and then watching with my roommates until midnight more or less. It's kind of cool having it in Canada though, and although that "I Believe" song makes me want to puncture my eardrums, I'm very proud of my countrymen.

Boldness
Having the ability to surprise myself, and exceed my own expectations. It's a wonderful feeling. Even better, when you just do it without giving it much thought. I think people need to strive for that more.

Things I Love Thursday: February 4, 2010

American Apparel
I have a pretty massive AA wish-list. It's so hard to narrow down what I want. And I live pretty close to one, although I'm pretty good at restraining myself.

Girls nights
My friend Abigail turned 19 the other day, so we celebrated at Jack Astor's and got multiple drinks. I've never really done that before, so it was fun having a girls night. Something we need to do more of. Although with a stricter budget.

Honey and lemon ginseng green tea
I see myself getting addicted to this. At least it has some benefits.

Things I Love Thursday: January 28, 2010

New Haircut
I've been wanting to get my haircut for awhile now. I was planning on doing it yesterday, but then my afternoon class was cancelled Monday and on a whim I went to this place called House of Lords on Yonge St. It has a cool rocker atmosphere, and it's cheap. Sure, my haircut didn't come out exactly as I wanted it, and I'm trying to figure out how to tame certain parts of it, but I like it overall.

Children's Lit Essay
Okay, this isn't due until March, but it's wonderful that I'm actually excited to write it. I plan on talking about gender politics and roles in Twilight. My professor [who is delightful by the way] hasn't specified any kind of questions or topics to talk about, but she did say we could write about Twilight if we wanted to, as she didn't choose it for the syllabus, due to how poorly written it is. I'd have to agree with her.

Fruit Punch
Went grocery shopping with Kayla yesterday, which is infinitely more fun with another person, and I bought some Arizona fruit punch, which I haven't had in a long time. It was wonderful. Plus the burrito I got at Burrito Boyz was a lovely addition.

Ottawa anticipation
Just bought my train ticket to go visit my friends up in the capital. I'm not fond of Ottawa as a city, but I'm excited for beaver tails and 24 hour diners and my friends spy-themed party. I'm going as a femme fatale. Shh don't tell anyone.

Enlightening conversations with friends
On Sunday night, I had a nice chat with my roommate Logan. It first started with asking about his painting and then it grew into talking about goals and life. I like those conversations. I mentioned how I was interested in writing a book and I was telling him my ideas and he was really receptive to the whole thing. It was a nice kick in the pants, and I've been writing steadily ever since. It feels really good actually.

Road trip playlists
I want to go on a road trip across Canada. In fact that's one of my goals for my twenties. I need to get a group of friends and a van, and hit the road. I'm torn between going out east or out west, and as much as I'd like to go east first then west, that might not be practical. We'll see! For now I'm making a playlist filled with songs I want to listen to, which I will probably divide into other subcategories depending on the time of day. Because I'm anal like that.

I'd also like to make some games and plan sights to see. Most likely "World's Largest Things". Make some road-trip bingo, and get a wacky journal to log everything, for which we'll yell log it at random intervals a la Brendan Leonard. I'm getting hyper just thinking about it.

Things I Love Thursday: January 14, 2010

Mexican food
Today I went out with my new friend Phillip and he showed me this place called Burrito Boyz on Adelaide. I love Mexican food, but I think my concept of it is limited to Tex Mex Lonestar fajitas. [Great food, but not really authentic]. This place was nice because a) not really a chain, b) not dirty and c) awesome food for cheap. I can't wait to show it to people.

Children's books
This semester I'm taking a Children's fiction class that is sure to be awesome. This week we have to read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and over the semester we're going to read Little Women, Anne of Green Gables, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone. The Harry Potter one is the only book on the list I've read [a travesty I know], but I'm excited to be reading so many wonderful classic books.

Drunk roommates
Last night, my roommates went out and got drunk on 9 dollar pitchers. Since I have no class today I was up until 3 reading anyway, and I went down and hung out with them. They're very entertaining when they're drunk [and it's completely true that when you're drunk you tell all your friends you love them]. Even when they're a little aggressive. [Yes, I'm wearing a retainer. No, I don't have headgear]

Bikram [Hot] Yoga
Cara is doing a 30 day hot yoga challenge and the place she goes to offers unlimited sessions for a week for 20 dollars. I went on Monday and Wednesday and lets just say I've never sweat so much in my life, and yet never felt better. Yesterday was pretty brutal, but it feels good to be active.

Train rides
I went home for a day this week to pick up some stuff left behind. After waiting for 40 minutes in the cold to go on a coach bus, I've decided I'm never taking the bus again. Train all the way. It's just such a better way to travel.

The fresh start of a new semester
Had my first class yesterday at 8 in the morning. In a movie theatre. I'm told that it's impossible to stay awake in this building because the seats or so comfortable. Anyway I digress, I'm excited for new classes and a new schedule and everything in general. Hopefully the workload won't be too bad.

On another note I feel like I should mention that it's been a whole year since my ex-boyfriend left for his mission. It's odd to think about where I was last year and where I am now, but at the same time I feel like I'm in a better place [except for other boy stuff I won't get into]. I haven't seen him in a year, yet it feels like longer. I don't know how any relationship can survive that. I still miss him, but I'm confident things will work out for the both of us.

Things I Love Thursday: December 24, 2009

The holidays
I've been home since Saturday, and not had any academic commitments since last Tuesday. It's been sweet.

Catching up with old friends
Had a get-together with my friends on Tuesday. Most of them I hadn't seen since the summer. It's great how we just slip into old habits. It's like we see each other all the time. At the same time I wish we'd see each other more, which I hope happens over the next year.

P.G. Wodehouse's Thank You, Jeeves
My friends and I are big fans of Stephen Fry. He is hilarious. You may know him from appearances in V for Vendetta or Bones, but he's very popular in Britain for his shows A Bit of Fry and Laurie, and Jeeves and Wooster with Hugh Laurie. To make a long story short the show inspired me to read some of the books it's based on, and it's amazing. So delightfully British and old-timey as it's set in pre-WWII Britain. I like being able to read for pleasure.

Merry Christmas Eve!

Gingerbread [Christmas cookies in general]
My roommate Mike bought two packages of those Pillsbury Doughboy cookie dough. Kayla already made the gingerbread, and I'm addicted. I can't wait for Christmas food.

Being done the semester
Last exam was at 3 on Tuesday, and now I'm officially done my first semester. For real this time. Last year at this time I was at home waiting out the strike going on at my old school. This is far more comforting.

Cranium
The other day my roommates busted this out and between the humdingers and Kayla screaming "CLUB CRANIUM" at the top of her lungs, a good time was had. We're probably going to play it tonight... we may get drunk and play it. Should be fun times.

The Office
The other day, my roommate Kayla decided to put on The Office having never seen it before. Simply something to have on in the background. Well she went through season 2 and 3 in three days and is catching up online. She is obsessed and I'm glad to indulge in it with her. It was exciting to remember the first time I saw Jim and Pam kiss and live vicariously through her excitement.

Being finished all my assignments for the semester
True, I still have five exams, but studying for a couple hours everyday is much better than scrambling to finish work. Weight off my shoulders.

Sleep
I'm developing a bad habit of staying up late and sleeping in until noon. Today, I fell asleep on the couch watching TV for two hours. I woke up a half an hour ago actually. It was jarring to wake up and have it be dark out. At the same time, it's nice to feel rested.

Things I Love Thursday

Tattoo fantasies
I've had an off and on desire to get a tattoo for a couple of years now. I didn't know what to get though, and my ex-boyfriend was so opposed to them that he said if I got one than he could get a gun. My desire at the time for one was not strong enough to warrant him getting a gun, but now... Well I think it would be really cool to get a simple design of birds along my back and side around my ribs. Not a whole lot, but a few. That way it can be easily disguised. At the same time that's the most painful place to get a tattoo, but I'm sure as hell not getting a tramp stamp. Maybe I will make it a birthday present to myself.

This has become my go-to website for procrastination fodder. I could spend all afternoon hearting the gorgeous pictures. It's kind of addicting.

Photo-shoots
On Sunday, our former Australian roommate came over to have a saucy photo-shoot as a gift for her boyfriend. We have a really cool exposed brick wall on the one side which was a perfect back drop for it. It was a helluva lot of fun, and I hope we do it again in the future. It's also making me excited for the photo-shoot that my friend Alie and I hopefully get around to doing over Christmas break.

November 12, 2009

I want her haircut so bad.
Joy of joys, I finished my essay... sort of. It needs work, but it's pretty much done.

Sibling Bonding
This past weekend my little brother and sister came to visit. It was so great to see them and show them around Toronto. We went to the Eaton Centre and made peanut butter chocolate chip cookies and just bonded in general. Something we didn't do a whole lot when I was at home. It was also kind of fun having them interact with my roommates. All the girls went away but the guys were here and they were gracious enough to let my little brother play video games with them. I wasn't even jealous that I couldn't go out with them later, because I was having fun with my siblings so much. Until they fell asleep at 11 and I got too freaked out to go to bed and had to wait until 4 in the morning when the guys finally came home. Oh well. I wasn't even too upset about that either.

Pep Talks
I had a pre-interview sort of thing at American Apparel on Tuesday. I say pre-interview, because it was only about five minutes long and we did it in the store, as opposed to a back room. If they want a second interview I'm supposed to hear back either today or tomorrow. Anyway I was talking to my awesome friend Alie, and she gave me a little pep talk, reminding me that I'm awesome and that even if I don't get the job, it was still an experience. Can I just say how much I love pep talks. I love to get them and to give them, even if it's just to myself. They're an amazing pick-me-up.

Hanging with just the guys
Now I love my female friends. They are a smashing group of girls. But there is something about hanging out with just guys, and I'm the only girl, that makes me feel special.

Hoodies
Remember the hoodie I bought on Saturday? Yeah, I'm wearing it right now. I think it's love.

Getting things done
This may be a bit premature, because I still have a pile of work to do this month. At the same time it's nice to make a list of things to do and be able to tick them off. Like cleaning the bathroom and doing laundry. *sigh*

Whip It!
I saw this movie on Sunday and although it's not necessarily a masterpiece it was still really good. It was such an empowering movie to watch. I love to see girls kick ass and take names. It inspires my inner badass.

This is pretty self-explanatory, but nothing is better when you're "sleeping" with your back turned to a guy and he turns over and wraps his arm around you. *melt*

It's Thursday!

Conquering simple tasks that made you nervous before
Today I photocopied notes in the library. Something I've never done before. Now it sounds silly, but I tend to get nervous about little things like this, because I just fear that I'll screw something up. It's irrational, yes, but I really can't help it. I'd been putting it off for days, but I finally photocopied some notes from a book, and it was a breeze. Talk about a confidence booster. I love completed small tasks like this, because it makes me feel like I can conquer the world.

Doing better on a midterm than expected

Random opportunities and compliments
There is this very nice Australian girl who used to live in my house. She stopped by today and mentioned that she had to go scouting for people to work at American Apparel so if there was anybody who was interested we should tell her. I immediately put up my hand and said I would love to work at American Apparel. She got my information and took my picture. Not only is that awesome, but then my roommate said I looked really pretty without my glasses [not that I'm not pretty when I'm wearing them] and suggested I get contacts. Again confidence booster.

Halloween anticipation
My house is going to have an epic Halloween party tomorrow night. I'm going to be Mrs. Robinson. I'm pumped.

Late night chats
Last night I was feeling a little bit down and then my friend Alie started talking to me on Facebook chat. My mood improved greatly and it gave me a chance to air some grievances I've been having in my life. It was reassuring, plus she taught me something that I'll be sharing with you guys soon.

Halloween anticipation
My house is having a huge party on the Friday before Halloween. It's going to be epic.

Sept 24, 2009

By Unknown*
On my old blog, in homage to the wonderful Gala Darling, I had a weekly post of Tuesday Tidbits. This time around I've decided to forgo beginning of the week affirmations and go with Thursday reminders as it's closer to the weekend [and I only have an hour of class during the day].

To start with:

Sleeping with the window open

Amazing first dates [and sober first kisses]

Getting some last bit of warm weather before autumn officially starts
